Why we built Spout
We started Spout in October 2019 because we saw a growing and ever present need for a new regenerative solution for drinking water. Over the last three years, we've developed an ingenious solution that provides a reliable, cost-effective and a sustainable way to harvest pure water from air. Our mission is to create the next wave of water abundance with a customer first approach, and create water producing technology accessible to as many people as possible.
Originally, Reuben came to grips with the reality that water is finite, when his family faced their farm’s water rights being threatened by the State of California in 2014.
Their farm began in 2010, when they planted 14 acres of young olive trees with the hope of producing olive oil for the nearby city of Los Angeles. But before their first harvest, they got a letter from the State of California saying because there’s a drought, the water from their well may be restricted or taxed, threatening their wellbeing.
Shortly after that letter, while walking his dog in the morning, Reuben recognized dew on a grassy field, and thought that there must be a way to harness this natural process. From there he made countless prototypes to find ways to do this as reliably, inexpensively, and as safely as possible.
He formed his first company at 24, called DewGood, and traveled the world meeting with water activists and governments, opening his eyes to the global water issues. In 2017 he made a trip to Flint Michigan where he met a woman who had accidentally poisoned and killed her two young children by serving them tap water. The story deeply impacted him and led him to pledge to her that he would never give up on getting this technology into the world.
Reuben met Tyler in 2018, and Tyler was immediately captivated by the technology, and asked to borrow a machine, at a time when DewGood was failing at being able to be a commercial success due to the expense of production required for such a large and complicated machine. Tyler had some great ideas about how to make some improvements on it, including making it smaller, quieter, and less expensive.
Talking to people it was clear, many folks felt terrible about using plastic bottles and wanted something higher quality than tap water. When we introduced the Spout machine, people reacted to it like it was magic. We found most people understand there's moisture in the air, but to have something that produces gallons of delicious water a day, made people feel like it was magic.
With our first funding received, we built the next generation of prototypes with an eye on mass manufacturing. With that design we received lots of encouraging signals, and we were able to raise more, evolving the product further by delivering greater functionality and refined looks by Fred Bould to make an elegant machine that can be a centerpiece of freshness in every modern home.
In 2022 we were able to make better looking prototypes and do a small scale manufacturing run. We ended up selling out of those initial machines in the first 2 months, which was very exciting. Getting feedback from our first customers has been the best part so far! We buit Spout to usher in a new age of water that doesn't require pipes, delivery fees, or bottles, and to give people a water product that focuses on simply making the purest water possible, the simplest and most reliable way possible.
We are developing these technologies to produce the highest quality drinking water on the planet and to design the next wave of water abundance. If you’re interested in joining us on this journey we would love to have your support.
Cheers,
-The Spout Team
