Why we built Spout

Why we built Spout

We started Spout in October 2019 because we saw a growing and ever present need for a new regenerative solution for drinking water. The first step in accomplishing this goal, we developed an ingenious solution that provides reliable, cost-effective and a sustainable way to harvest pure water from air.  Our mission is to develop a new class of devices starting in the home, and make them accessible to as many people as possible.

We thought - Like most people in developed parts of the world, don’t think about where their water comes from, and they assume it’s always going to be there for them, taking their access to high quality water for granted. Reuben came to grips first hand when his family faced their farm’s water rights being threatened by the state, only then realizing how fragile the water system actually is.

In 2010, they planted 14 acres of young olive trees with the hope of producing olive oil for the nearby city of Los Angeles. Before their first harvest, they got a letter from the State of California saying because there’s a drought, the water from their well may be restricted or taxed, threatening their wellbeing.

On a morning walk, Reuben recognized the dew on a grassy field, and thought that there must be a way to harness this natural process. From there he made countless prototypes to find ways to do this reliably.

He traveled the world, met with water activists and even made a trip to Flint Michigan where he met a woman who had accidentally poisoned and killed her two young children by serving them tap water. The story deeply impacted him and led him to pledge to her that he would never give up on getting this technology into the world.

He even met with a woman who had unintentionally poisoned her two children, making him realize the importance of generating fresh water for families. Driving home that this is a matter of life or death.

Tyler was really captivated by the technology, and asked to borrow a machine, or the prototype, he had some great ideas about how to make some improvements on it, including smaller, quieter, and less expensive.

Talking to people it was clear, many folks felt terrible about using plastic bottles and wanted something better than water clever. When we introduced this, people reacted to it like it was magic. Most people understand there's moisture in the air, but to think that it was possible to use clear science that felt like real magic.

With this funding we built the next generation of prototype with an eye on mass manufacturing, with that we received lots of encouraging signals, the team is - evolving the product further - delivering greater functionality and refined looks by Fred Bould to make this a centerpiece of freshness for every modern home.

With this new round of funding, we were able to make better looking prototypes and do a small scale manufacturing run. We ended up selling out of those initial machines in the first 2 months, which was very exciting.

Our focus is and has always been to produce the highest quality drinking water on the planet and to design the next wave of water abundance. If you’re interested in joining us on this journey we would love to have your support.

Cheers,
